The case of Tabata, whose cell phone was stolen while she was in traffic, garnered significant attention this week and highlighted a risk that goes far beyond the loss of the device itself: access to the information and accounts stored on it.After the criminals took the phone—which had been visible inside the car—they managed to transfer R$ 2,000 via Pix from the victim’s account. The incident reignited an important discussion about what steps to take in the immediate aftermath of a theft, especially when the device is unlocked.
Marcelo Nagy, a partner at STWBrasil and a cybersecurity specialist, discussed this case while appearing on the program *Encontro* with Patrícia Poeta. During the segment, he explained why acting quickly can make a difference and outlined the initial steps to take to hinder criminals' access to the device, its apps, and the accounts linked to it.
His recommendations included the importance of using another mobile phone to attempt to lock the device remotely and immediately notifying banks and financial institutions. However, there are other important measures that can help minimize losses.
