Pix has become the most used payment method in the country and, for that very reason, has become the target of increasingly specific scams. One of them was the subject of our director Renan Cavalheiro's participation, from STWBrasil, on the Hoje em Dia program (Record TV): the misuse of the Pix refund mechanism.
The Central Bank created this feature to help those who transferred money to scammers or were forced to make a payment. The problem is that malicious customers are using the same feature to dispute legitimate purchases, which directly affects those who sell on a small scale.
Renan explained that, when a dispute is opened, the bank can retain the amount and analyze the case. If the merchant does not have proof of the sale, they risk losing the money. Therefore, the advice is to create a trail of evidence for each sale.
According to the expert, the scam sometimes appears in low amounts precisely to go unnoticed. If it works, the fraudster repeats it.
The final recommendation was to treat Pix with the same care as any other payment method: with documentation, registration, and verification.
This allows entrepreneurs to prove to the bank that a sale actually occurred and prevent losses.
